Surrey County Council launch mobile text service for their buses

Texts inform people waiting how long away the next three buses are.

Surrey County Council have launched a mobile phone text service to inform people waiting for the bus how long the next three services are away.

People text a unique bus stop code to 84268 and within seconds they receive a text message with real-time information on how long they have to wait.

If someone is waiting for a bus that is not able to transmit real-time travel, they will receive scheduled timetable information, and people can also ask for information on a specific service to find out how long it will take the buses on that route to arrive.

The first 4,000 texts are free to encourage people to start using the service and the scheme will cover 3,800 stops in Surrey.

Richard Lewis, from Arriva, said: "The ability to obtain travel information easily and conveniently is a key element in helping to encourage people to shift from car to bus and the use of mobile phones to receive such information could not be more convenient."
