£10,000 fine for speeding on motorways under consideration

The government is looking into plans for drivers to face a £10,000 fine for speeding on the motorway if found guilty.

Justice minister, Jeremy Wright, announced last night that Magistrates Courts will be given the power to quadruple fines for offences such as drink-driving and driving with defective tyres or brakes, with a maximum penalty of up to £10,000.

Drivers who are caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel or ignore a red light could see fines rise from £1,000 to £4,000.

It would be the first change to the penalty structure in more than 20 years.

Mr Wright said the sweeping reforms would be an “effective way of punishing criminals” and added it would deter individuals from further offending.
