DfT introduces new technology to improve road works

Road WorksNew technology designed to improve the management of road works is set to be introduced, the (DfT) Department for Transport has announced

Local Transport Minister Norman Baker said that the changes will enable better coordination between local councils and utility companies, with the aim being to modernise the way in which they share information.

And as well as improving efficiency, it is also expected that the new scheme will lead to significant financial savings over time.

"It is estimated that about two thousand hours could be saved by councils and utility companies every week by using the new system, saving industry alone £600,000 a year," the Minister said.

"In total, the street works sector is expected to net savings of £14.3 million over the next ten years."

Councils and utility companies will be legally bound to use the new system when it comes into force, with all required to do so by April 2014.
