The Department of Transport has announced an investment of £30,000 to develop a mobile app to report potholes. The app called ‘Fill That Hole’, developed by The National Cycling Charity (CTC), is currently only available on the iPhone platform.
Thanks to this additional investment by the transport authority, CTC has started developing the app on Android and will launch it before June. The authority expects users to grow to more than 26 million.
The app receives up to 20,000 reports annually and the data is provided to the respective local councils in real time so they can repair the potholes.
The current web site even provides a League Table ranking highway authorities according to how well they have been fixing the reported defects.
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport Robert Goodwill said that the government is committed to improve the pothole situation in order to improve road safety for vehicle owners and cyclists.
Local councils have been advised to schedule extensive maintenance in advance instead of repairing potholes which can be more costly.
The government has allocated over £3 billion for authorities to carry out such road maintenance.
