Study shows major disparities in UK rail services

There are major discrepancies between the rail services in the UK, with Wales lagging behind other nations, according to a new report.

The Campaign for Better Transport study showed that devolving responsibility could improve transport in Wales, as currently services are used less and have lower passenger satisfaction.

Stephen Joseph, the Chief Executive of the transport charity, said the devolved Scottish rail service fared better than those in Wales, which is still managed by Whitehall.

"There is definitely room for improvement and a case for the Welsh Government to make the case for much more control over the Welsh railway... and managing it much more itself," he told BBC Radio Wales.

The (DfT) Department for Transport has been in discussions with the Welsh Government to assess the possibility of developing responsibilities for the rail franchise held by Arriva Trains Wales.

The study comes as details of the £24 million upgrade of stations at Rhyl, Aberystwyth, Pontypridd, Ystrad Mynach and Port Talbot Parkway was announced.
