The Government has announced a new programme that aims to make hydrogen powered travel a UK reality.
UK H2 Mobility is a cross-industry partnership, including several carmakers. Launched by Business Minister Mark Prisk, the programme will see three government departments come together with participants from the utility, gas, infrastructure and global car manufacturing industries in order to ‘evaluate the potential’ for hydrogen as a fuel for the UK.
Hydrogen power would be used in what are known as Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles – a category that also encompasses 100% electric cars including the Nissan Leaf , plug-in hybrids such as Volvo’s V60 and range-extenders like the Chevrolet Volt / Vauxhall Ampera.
UK H2 Mobility’s ultimate goal is to produce an action plan for the roll-out of hydrogen cars to consumers as early as 2014/2015.
