A £36 million scheme to double up the rail line between Wrexham and Chester has been unveiled.
The announcement comes at the end of a 10-year battle to increase capacity on the route – one of the busiest in the region – to make life easier for commuters and to boost economic opportunities.
After years of lobbying for a solution by Wrexham Council and other politicians, the Welsh Government has finally earmarked £36.6 million for a scheme to redouble key sections of the line – totalling seven miles of track – between Wrexham General Station and Saltney Junction.
This will give the immediate possibility of increasing the frequency of services from hourly to half-hourly.
Wrexham Council leader, Cllr Ron Davies, said: “This is marvellous news and long overdue.
“Redoubling this line also means it will now be technically possible to have the Holyhead to Cardiff express stopping in Wrexham rather than Crewe.”
As part of the same scheme a further £9.8 million will be spent on increasing the line speed between Gobowen and Shrewsbury to 90mph.
