HS2 abandons Euston rebuild

HS2 RailHS2 has abandoned plans to knock down and rebuild the whole of Euston Station in London, saying new plans it has now produced would lessen disruption and save time by not involving the rebuilding of all existing platforms.

The organisation says it has developed the new plans, which will be subject to public consultation in the next few months, in response to concerns from the local community about the disruption that would have been caused by development work going on for more than a decade.

The plans also mean that Britain’s sixth busiest station could continue to operate “mostly as normal” without having to move services from old platforms to new ones.

The new plans still involve potential for over-station development for homes, open space or businesses; a pedestrian underpass between Euston and Euston Square underground stations; and east-west pedestrian routes across the station that are intended to join up communities divided by it.

They now also include improved station facilities with a new combined concourse and facade.

The new plans will be included in the draft environmental statement for HS2, due to be published in the next few months before public consultation starts.

HS2 chief executive Alison Munro said “Following more work done by our engineers to find the best way to deliver best value for taxpayers, we have identified an option that we believe delivers great opportunities for the area while minimising the potential effects on local communities in Camden and on passengers.”
